The Indian Postal Service was formed in 1948

It is one of the Group 'A' Central Civil Service of India.

The cadre controlling authority is Director General, Posts.

Cadre size: 573 posts (direct recruitment – 75%, promotion - 25%).

Indian Postal Service functions under the brand name India Post and consists of 154000 post offices all over the country.

Apart from postal services, the post offices also provide limited financial services.

Functions of the Officers

Coordination with a number of government agencies, such as, the Railways and the Airlines for mail transportation

Coordination with the Department of Finance through its countrywide network of Post Offices and state governments to manage small savings

Interaction with the law and order agencies to ensure safety and security of cash and valuables in Post Offices, transmission of cash and police assistance in times of general unrest and strikes.
