  Meaning of  Public Administration  means  the management of Governmental  affairs.

  Major  role  of Government  is mainly  related  with  two things  ie  Rule  and service .

  Maintenance  of law is the example of   Rule  while supply  of  electricity  is  the example  for  service .

The  term  civil  service  refers  to  the large body  of permanent government  officers and  servants which carries out  the routine work  of  administration . 

Civil  services is divided  into several specialized departments  .

The Indian  civil  services  may be classified  under three heads 
1. The  All  India Services 2. The  Central Services  3. The  state services .

Former name of IAS ( Indian  Administrative Services )  is  ICS Imperial  Civil Services .

The  Indian Constitution  has empowered the parliament to  establish new all  India Services as and  when necessary .

The recruitment to  All  India  Services is made by  the Central  Government .

The Civil Services Examination is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

Recruits are trained as administrative generalists at an academy at Mussoorie.

Indian Administrative Service officer is assigned to increasingly more responsible positions, such as a district collector after six or seven year.

A larger organization, the Central Public Services, staffs a broad variety of administrative bureaus ranging from the Indian Foreign Service to the Audits and Accounts Service and the Postal Service.

Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian to join the Indian Civil Service. He was selected for the Indian Civil Service in June, 1863.

The Cabinet Secretary is the  topmost post an IAS officer can occupy in India

Most IAS officers start their careers in the state administration at the sub-divisional level as a sub divisional magistrate

Article 312 of the Constitution for creation of one or more All India Services common to the Union and State.

The Indian Forest Service, was created in 1966
